clear disposable bottle on black surfaceOur son spent the night at his grandparents on a Tuesday night. When my mother in law brought him home she pointed out that he drank a lot. Like a ton. She filled his cup 6 times in an hour and he was requesting water. He was also peeing a lot. Makes sense with all the drinking.
That night he had an accident which he hadn’t in months. The next day after preschool his assistant brought him to the car and said he asked for water a couple of times and used the bathroom a lot. I thought ok, maybe he has a bladder infection. I guess we will go see his doctor.
The next day we went saw the doctor and he peed in a cup. We talked about what was going on and she came back in and said our son has Type 1 Diabetes. He has tons of sugar in his pee and there’s no other reason. You need to go home, pack a bag and go to Children’s where you will stay for a couple of days and learn how to care for him.
That was it…. we packed, gathered kids, drove to the Children’s Hospital, went in to triage, got his sugar checked which was 647.  They hooked him to an IV and started him on an insulin drip. The next few days were filled with tears, screams, holding him down for shots and finger pokes, insulin training, carb counting, low symptoms, high symptoms, pharmacy calls, insurance calls, tears and more tears.
